Hall of FameThe Place Where Children's Advocates Receive a Hero's Welcome December 5, 2007 Regularly we read of the orphan crisis in Africa where AIDS, starvation, and armed conflict have robbed children of their parents. But the problem is greater than Africa. The United Nations counts 143 million kids as orphans . . . all over the world. Besides disease and starvation, many children are abandoned due to poverty, restrictive population control policies, disabilities and biased cultural traditions. The United States is not exempt. Did you know that: In the United States 30% of all homeless adults spent time in foster care. One in three youth who turn 18 and leave foster care resort to stealing, prostitution, or selling drugs. One in four spend time in jail or prison.
The Voice of the Orphan campaign will seek to educate and mobilize concerned Christians worldwide. There are many ways we can manifest God's love to these children through prayer, financial assistance, adoption, advocacy, and orphan care projects. Please visit the links above for more information. Per the Orphans First website, there are 300-400 million child-slaves in the world, millions of war-victim children; and starving, sick, abused and abandoned victims everywhere. Orphans First helps hurting children in Asia, Africa, America and Europe. "Through the teaching of God's Word, these little ones who thought they were last learn that through Christ they are first (Mt. 19:30). The fatherless learn they have a Father (Ps. 68:5). And abandoned children learn they have a family (Ps. 68:6). ORPHANS FIRST--expressing God's heart to hurting children to help them become: HAPPY as they receive Jesus' love manifest through his church HEALTHY as they receive food, education and shelter HOPEFUL as they learn about God's grace through His Word HELPFUL as they learn to serve God and to tell others about Him."

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) FOR CHILDREN. Each year thousands of children in Multnomah and Washington Counties become wards of the juvenile court system because they have been victims of abuse and neglect. Due to complex home situations and lack of resources, some children can spend years in foster care until they are reunited with their birth families or placed in an adoptive home. Through the efforts of 362 active CASA trained volunteers, Oregon's child welfare system gained the equivalent of 42.5 full-time paid employees in 2006. Donating over 86,880 hours of volunteer advocacy, CASAs appeared in over 1,200 court hearings before 17 Judicial Officers in 2 counties, Court Appointed Special Advocates are ordinary men and women from all walks of life, educational levels and ethnic backgrounds who volunteer to serve as an advocate for a child or sibling group. Each volunteer commits to 10-20 hours per month over a 1-1/2 - 2 year period of service. As a result of training and regular program supervision, CASAs bring objectivity, competence, tenacity and consistent advocacy into an overloaded child welfare system. CASAs remind everyone involved--from parents and caseworkers to lawyers and judges--that, at the heart of each case, is a child who deserves a safe and loving place to call home.
